the bee

Makinzie was one of the two kids in her class chosen to represent in the school wide spelling bee.  The rules were a bit different in that each child could miss two words before being disqualified, so we knew we'd at least get to see two rounds before the youngest kid in the contest got out.

Kinzie, unfortunately, freezes up like an Alaskan winter when there's any pressure or if there is any chance of embarrassment.  While she sailed through the first round, things got a little dicey come round two. Part of the problem may have been the fact that the microphone used by the lady giving the words malfunctioned about every third kid, but we won't make excuses.  Though some of the kids were thoroughly confused by what they heard.  When it was her turn in round three, the lady gave Kinzie a word Andrea & I were certain she could handle:  fashion.  This girl had been asking for fashion designer books for years now.  She had this round in the bag.  Unfortunately, our little girl crumpled under the pressure like a NASCAR bumper hitting the wall on turn 4. The ding of the bell meant Kinzie got to go sit with her class.
Despite this little hiccup, we are so proud of our little girl (who, apparently, is not so little anymore!).  She will likely always be the youngest in her class, but continues to be an awesome student and daughter.  So glad we get to be her Mom & Dad!
